I think they also have a different flavours; cress has quite a peppery taste (like mustard) and alfalfa is more mild.

Alfalfa - says in tamil as "kudhirai masal". I can not find any thing separate in this name. But Alfalf seed look like "Kollu". This kollu is main food for Horse(kudhirai). So I think both are same.
