Good teachers will usually teach the history of beliefs; when I was at school we read through one of the Genesis stories of creation and the teacher said, "Look at the order in which Genesis says things appeared; it turns out that this sequence largely matches what scientists believe actually happened - do you think that when Genesis was written, they actually knew the sequence?"
No-one thought they knew the sequence - but that they'd had a good guess.
So he didn't ridicule the religious belief, he made us realise that the belief was written a long time before the invention of science.
