Caiman (note spelling) and alligators are in the same family of crocodilians. However, they are distinctly different and live in different areas. All species of caiman are native to Central and South America and are basically tropical and subtropical. (They have been introduced to some other areas, like S. Florida.) Alligators are temperate zone animals and can tolerate cold winters and freezing temperatures (as in N. Carolina, etc.). There are two species: The American (SE U.S.) and the Chinese (E. China). They are similar in appearance, but the American species is much larger. The Chinese species might be the origin of the Chinese dragon mythologies.
