Sailors and explorers. Christopher Columbus brought some of his hard working horses on a jorney with him to help carry supplies when hitting dry land. Some people also say that a giant ship carrying dozens of horses had crashed into North America, the horses swam a shore on to the land of what is know know as the United States of America and Canada. Prehistoric horses lived in North America up until about 1500 years ago. But they had roamed to other continents before dying out in North America.

The present day "mustangs" are not native to North America and were introduced by Spanish conquistadors.

Horses were brought back to North America by settlers, also afew horses had remained and thus created herds, not many lived due to the fact they were used to being looked after by farmers, but during the gold-rush they had to learn to fend for themselves.
