American troops deploy for time periods of six months to up to over a year unfortunately. When Marines or soldiers get orders to guard embassies, they could be guarding for years in numerous, usually dangerous locations. The numbers of troops in Afghanistan will begin to decrease around July of 2011 but there will not be a complete withdrawal of forces until their country is as stable as we can help it get.
