The Whig Party existed during the Presidency of Andrew Jackson - and were opposed to his policies and his Democratic Party.

The Whigs strongly believed in the supremacy of Congress (rather than the President), and wanted modernisation.

The party was dissolved when members had conflicting views about slavery - and most of the Northern Whigs joined the new Republican Party (which Lincoln belonged to and helped end slavery).
