In May 2013 the United States of America consists of 50states plus a federal district, the District of Columbia. In addition, the U.S. owns several officially uninhabited islands and five inhabited territories including Puerto Rico, which formally requested U.S. statehood in December 2012 (the U.S. Congress has not yet voted on Puerto Rican statehood, deciding instead to fund another referendum in Puerto Rico regarding their desired status, due to the unusual way in which the question was presented to the Puerto Rican people in 2012).
