What is the difference between a watchdog and a guard dog?

Watch dogs make a huge fuss when anyone comes around. They will alert you that something is wrong. A chihuahua could be a watch dog. Guard dogs can--at least in theory--actually protect you, although you need to do a good bit of obedienc training etc if you want to be able to count on him and control him. According to a sociological study of burglars that I read, they are less likely to break into a house if they think the people inside are awake and alert, regardless of the size of the dog. The study also said they are more afraid of large black dogs. Why black? It didn't say.

How are guard dogs different from attack dogs?

Guard dogs are different from attack dogs because guard dogs will bark loudly to alert their owners of an intruder's presence and to scare away the intruder. Attack dogs will also bark loudly to alert their owners, but will go in for the attack.

Did people have dogs in the Victorian era?

Yes, they did. There are many references to dogs in the Victorian books I have read, varying from lap dogs, to hunting dogs and vicious guard dogs and watch dogs. In point of fact, people have have dogs since the beginning of written history and likely before that. Dogs and humans seem to have a natural affinity.
