Carpenter ants don't like vibrations. We had carpenter ants in the ceiling of our cabin over our bed, and in the spring they'd boot the drones out, and we'd have big flying ants buzzing around the house. I worked in the Biology department at Stanford at the time, and Debra Gordon, the resident ant expert, told me they don't like vibrations--especially random or intermittent vibrations--so I wired a flexible shoulder massager that we never used to the ceiling, put a new battery in, and left it on when we were at work. When we were home, I'd turn it on an off a few times during the evening. After a few days, they moved elsewhere. Carpenter ant nests in houses are usually satellites of larger hives in trees or logs nearby--they move into the house in winter. Remove any downed logs from the ground or deadwood from trees near your house to help control them.
