I don't usually inject my personal opinion into an answer, but in this case, yes I am sure because (a) I am friendly with Michelle Obama's cousin, who is a well-respected rabbi and who has known Barack and Michelle for years; (b) other friends of the president and first lady have seen them participating in Christian events, such as church services; and (c) the president says he is a Christian and I have no reason to doubt him.

When people ask questions like this, they are often referring to the fact that President Obama is not public about his faith the way President Bush was. But other presidents, including President Reagan, were equally private about their faith. Also, some people believe that a Christian must be conservative: that is not true, as there are millions of liberal and moderate Christians. And finally, some people have heard negative things about President Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, the man who conducted the president and Michelle's wedding and who brought him to Christian faith after he spent a number of years with no religion at all. A debate could be had about whether the pastor's views were accurately represented by the media, but whether or not the media were fair to Reverend Wright, his views have nothing to do with what President Obama believes. There is considerable evidence that President Obama is a Protestant Christian, as are his wife and two daughters.
