The Basic principle is verysimilar to a petrol/gasoline engine. The standard 4 stroke diesel has 4 parts cycles. In the induction stroke when the piston is going down and the inlet valve is open air is sucked in (in a turbo engine blown in). At the bottom of the stroke both valves are shut and the piston is forced up by the flywheel/other cylinders. The air gets very hot and just before the top diesel is injected as a mist and it ignites and forces the piston down (power stroke). At the end of the power stroke the piston is forced back up and the exhaust valve is open and the burnt gases are pushed out of the exhaust pipe. The cycle then starts again.
The main difference between gasoline engines and Diesels are:-
The compression ratio of diesels are around double than petrol's around 1:16-1:22
The fuel is injected directly into the cylinder
There are no spark plugs as the heat generated by compression ignites the fuel mist.
Diesels are built of a heavier construction to withstand higher stresses
No, a diesel is a compression firing engine and a petrol is a spark firing engine. Diesel fuel will not burn in a petrol engine with spark plugs.

How do you adjust the idle speed on a citroen berlingo 1.9d (basic diesel engine)
The working principle of these instruments is same as that of the d'Arsonval type of galvanometers, the difference being that a direct reading instrument is provided with a pointer and a scale. The basic principle of this device is the interaction of magnetic field of the compass (a permanent magnet) and the field around the conductor (a simple electromagnet)
ArchimedesAlternate Answer:The principle of the lever might be stated as; 'Give me a firm place to stand and I shall move the world.'This is the principle behind the lever, but it is also basic to every electric motor that exists, every gas engine that exists, every diesel engine that exists, every engine that exists and every rocket motor or jet engine that exists. It is far, far more important than 'the lever'. His principle did move the world into the Industrial and Rocket Ages and gave us electricity. He was possibly more important to Mechanics than Newton.Yes, it was Archimedes.
