Down syndrome can't be cured because it isn't a disease, it's a genetic mutation. Persons with down syndrome have an extra 21st chromosome.

There are genetic mutations which result in the body not supplying or handling nutrients, hormones, or other substances properly. Those, when detected at childbirth or even in-vitro (before childbirth) may be treatable by supplying missing substances so the body can thrive properly, Other mutations may require surgical procedures to treat a problem.

Downs is different. It isn't just a change in an existing chromosome. It is a whole additional chromosome. It can involve physical issues such that a survival after birth may not be possible even with the most heroic medical and surgical procedures.

Hopefully at some point in the future, we will have a better understanding of what is going on, why the extra chromosome is present and what to do about it.
