A person who is under the legal age of majority, must receive the consent parental or legal guardian before they can obtain a marriage license. Some states will accept a notarized statement, others require the parents or guardian to be present at the time the application for license is made. A few states make an exception to the necessity of such consent if the specified circumstances are proven to be present. The age of majority in all but four states is 18. In Alabama and Nebraska the legal age is 19, in Mississippi and Pennsylvania it is 21.
