depends on which state of the country you are in- but it is a TERRIBLE idea. even the smallest businesses are now requiring a high school diploma. so if you drop out, forget about getting any job and forget about having money, family, and home- at least a decent family and home because of all the money troubles you WILL have in your near future. its also not smart at all to simply just not go to college- just thought i would tell you that. its really sad that you are thinking about dropping out- and that a 14 year old like me is giving you advice! and i have first hand experience with high school drop outs (no relation) and a person who waited many years to go to college so please take my advice- i'd hate to know someone ignored me and ruined their life... REALLY HOPE THIS INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION! :)

Recently, in late March 2008, the Senate passed a bill saying that you must be seventeen to drop out of high school legally in Maryland, as opposed to the original sixteen years of age you could have been before March.
The state's compulsory education law requires the student to remain in school until the age of sixteen. However, the state's legal age of majority if 18, therefore if the student's parents object to the child's wanting to quit, they can force him or her to remain in school.

No where does it say a 16 year old can drop out without parental consent. States require the parents to agree because the parents are still responsible for the child. Until they reach the age of majority, the minor is subject to their decisions.
