Yes, it can. In most big bands, they are not commonly used. But in many jazz bands, there is a french horn section of three or four players. Giovanni Hoffer is a well known jazz french horn player. It might have more to do however with the quality of the musician than on the selection of instruments.

The traditional french horn is not usually used on a marching band field just due to the sheer peculiarities of the direction that it produces tone. On a marching band field, most of the sound has to go forward, because you are not in a concert hall that bounces and focuses sound forward for you. The bell faces backwards, and no one sitting on the front sideline would hear it.

There were very strange versions of marching french horns, and in fact, some still do use a wierdly-shaped marching french horn that faces the bell forward, but most bands nowadays use the mellophone, which is a bell-front instrument that is closer to the trumpet in terms of appearance, with a much larger bell that flares out widely.

Horns parts are sometimes written in jazz charts. The Stan Kenton Band had four mellophones often, so there is a whole body of literature with 4 mellophone parts now played by horn players on horns. There are a few "jazz hornists" Arkady Shilklopher, Tom Varner, Adam Unsworth, Julius Watkins (old recordings), Rick Todd, Willie Ruff, Jerry Peel, John Clark, and others whose recordings are available. Other hornplayers like John Barrows, James Buffington, Gunther Schuller, David Amram and others playedjazz in ensembles. There are a lot of jazz horn recordings out there if one begins to look.

No. British brass bands instead use E-flat alto/tenor horns (alto in American English, tenor in British English).

The french horn is used in pretty much any band/group/ensemble, unless if it is strictly for another instrument or group of instruments, or if it is a jazz band.

What horns are related french horn?

The french horn is in the category of Brass instruments. All other brass instruments are technically relatives of the french horn. ---------------- The closest thing I could think of is a mellophone.... Its like a french horn but for Marching Band.... It sort of looks like a trumpet. Trumpets are also relatives of the french horn... I would suggest if you are a beginner to start out on the trumpet then move to one of these instruments.... I would know because I play mellophone now and its my 3rd year of band and I just stopped playing trumpet. Hope this helps.

Where does french horn come from?

France. It was originally a hunting horn, and is now one of the coolest brass instruments in the modern concert band. The French horn as we know it today comes from Germany. The french designation is only used in the english language, probably for the same reason french fries arent called geman fries (they came from germany)... and of course the ENGLISH horn is actually french....
