A Mule is the result of sexual reproduction between a donkey and a horse. Due to the mismatching chromosome number of the two parent species, the mule itself has 63 chromosomes, a mixture of horse and donkey DNA. Because of this, the natural process that produces reproductive cells rarely works properly in mules, the chromosomes in a fertilized cell rarely pair up properly.
However reproduction is not impossible, there are documented (and very rare) cases of female mules producing offspring when mated with a purebred donkey or horse. Male mules themselves are always sterile.
