If you buy an iphone 3g can you just stick your ATT SIM card from your previous cell phone in it?

It depends on your location and your network For example, in the US, AT&T have a deal with Apple for a 2 year contract.
Now, you can always jailbreak your iPhone and then put in the other Sim card. You will retain your number. But I can't really say if your network will trace it or not.

The iPhone will not recognize SIM contacts until they are imported to the Contact list via Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Import SIM Contacts The iPhone does not save contacts to the SIM card, and therefore if the SIM is from an old iPhone there won't be any SIM contacts present.

I dont know why but i think you can just buy an iphone off amazon.com or overstock.com and put in your own phone company sim card into it. (EX: like I could put my T-Mobile SIM card into the iPhone.)
