They are far more likely to hurt you. Narcissists tend to be difficult to touch emotionally, since they immediately turn on people who cross them and assume that the person is "out to get them." Thus criticism and insults tend to roll off like water off a duck.

The best way to deal with a narcissist is to get away from them and stay away. If you are in an abusive relationship, your local mental health association or department of family services should be able to help.

Yes absolutely, the question really is would you want to? The reason I say that is that a narcissist is a human being and he/she would be susceptible to manipulation and deceit therefore they can be tricked and then beaten in that sense.

Now narcissists are known for their rigidity in how they view the world and that rigidity is so strict that it causes them to take these personal shots to their personality and to their character that are so deep and so strong that it leaves with them this pervasive need to right that wrong regardless of the cost of themselves.

This means that some narcissist will go to no end in order to strike back at you for what you've done. The one thing that is pretty universal is that if a narcissist is targeting you and they strike at you whatever they're doing is going to be far more severe and disproportional toward you in comparison to what you did to them. So if you hit them with a hammer they'll hit you with a bomb. You can guarantee that the repercussion that is coming back that is going to be happening to you will be almost an absolute certainty.

Its also going to be far worse than what you did to them. It's just the nature of the disorder. So any sane person would answer that question 'no I wouldn't want to.' So, that should really be the response that you should feel comfortable with landing on is that, to know this person is going to come back at you and hit you harder than you could possibly imagine and In a way that is going to potentially cripple you either financially in your workplace or at home somehow with your relationship with the other people in your life. It's not worth it.

It's better to stand down take your lumps disappear and live to fight another day and live happily ever after. This other individual unfortunately, they are on high alert at all times looking for people that are perceived to be attacking them, hurting them, or out to get them in some way shape or form. You can't beat somebody that's on that kind of alert all the time. They will also hit you in such a sneaky way that you can't prove that Anything has been done to you at all by them. It will be unprovable. Stay away from angering a narcissist has it is not worth it your pain.

Narcissism has a genetic component to it, which makes a child more prone to getting the disorder with certain factors in place. The genetics aspect of it is the temperament of the child and their ability and resiliency for handling situations in life. When the temperament is combined with the insecure attachment style of avoidant there is a good chance that given the environmental factors such as parenting and home life etc that a child could develop narcissism.

It's been found that for grandiose narcissism a father's influence is positively correlated with a child getting grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism is positively correlated with the mother being responsible for the circumstances that make the child into a vulnerable narcissist. So genetics are important but environmental also plays a very big role in this as well.

There are two essentially ways that a child can develop narcissism one is to be overly indulged with inconsistent parenting and the other one is to be neglected or abused and it becomes a defense mechanism or a combination of the two is also another possibility.

So, a person can have high narcissistic traits without having the disorder and everybody on some level has narcissism it's just the traits that make up a narcissist are at a lower level spectrum for healthy individuals and those traits are high for the unhealthy which creates problems in their relationships both at work and at home. So, everybody is on a spectrum of narcissism to begin with but when it comes to the disorder you either have it or you don't. If you don't have it by the time you're in your adult hood then you'll never have it. That's where it is able to be diagnosed as an years of early adulthood when empathy should have properly evolved into the child and if there's an impairment that's usually prevalent in adulthood because children in their teen years are expected to retain some level of narcissism as it's in important for them in order to be able to separate from their parents to form their own individual identity. But once they're in young adult it's expected that empathy forms and that narcissism dissipates with a greater worldly view. In those that that does not occur in they would qualify for the disorder providing their symptoms are causing them problems in their job or in their home life and they go looking for help to understand why they're having such difficulties.

So to answer your question, no you can't just get narcissism once you're an adult. You either have it or you don't. Having said that, a person could have high narcissistic traits that are latent and not immediately visible to people until that person gets stressed and has extra stressors in their life that causes their narcissism to come out in full. So it could look like an adult just got narcissism but they already had it It's just they were better at controlling it and containing the symptoms. There's probably a life stressor that is causing them issues that have made it come out.

You don't "get" narcissism. It is genetic and PERMANENT and does not respond to treatment
