On a general note, saffron is a plant that is used for Asthma, cough, and to loosen phlegm. It is also used for insomnia, cancer, flatulence, modd swings, heartburn and dry skin. Women use saffron for menstrual cramps and PMS.

However, taking large amounts of saffron is UNSAFE. High doses can cause poisoning. In pregnant women, larger amounts of saffron can make the uterus contract and might cause a miscarriage. Doses of 12-20 grams can cause death.

During pregnancy, it is used for the improvement of digestion and appetite. It is found to be extremely beneficial for providing relief from gas and acidity related problems. It is a very popular answer to many skin problems, like dry skin, enhancing and lightening the skin tone. Saffron is considered as a blood purifier and anti-inflammatory properties, so it should only be used in small quantities.

But the intake of saffron during pregnancy should be restricted to after the 7th month (the last trimester); and even then, only 2-3 strands at the most should be mixed with some warm water and milk. ever exceed the amount of saffron to be taken with milk. Just a few strands are enough. Too much of saffron can lead to contractions as saffron tends to stimulate the uterus.

Although it is beleived in many South Asian cultures that eating saffron while pregnant will help improve the complexion of the baby. This is just mere superstition. Babies are born following the genetic make-up of it's parents and nothing else can influence it's appearance.

Not enough is known about the safety of using saffron during breast-feeding. So it is better to stay on the safe side and avoid its use during this period.

"P.S: People who are allergic to these plants like Lolium, Olea (includes olive), and Salsola plant species might also be allergic to saffron."
