Can the water line to an outside valve ie garden hose be from the outlet of a water softener or does it have be be from the supply side of the softener?

Normally, the supply line for an outside hose bib is taken from the supply side (the line into the softner), since softened water (the line out) contains a certain amount of salt that is not particularly good for watering lawns or washing cars.
In areas with hard water, this Plumbing arrangement is often referred to as a "third line water system", meaning there are cold and hot water softened lines, and a third unsoftened line for drinking/cooking water and for external hose bibs.
