Vehicles can run on fuel cells and this has been demonstrated, but I don't think there have been any produced for general sale, probably they are too expensive to make. A vehicle takes a certain amount of energy to run, wherever the energy comes from. Of course if electric cars have low speeds and are smaller and lighter than normal ones, they will use less energy, but then you are not comparing like with like. A family going on vacation, perhaps towing a boat or trailer, will still need plenty of power, and high power means energy being used at a high rate.
Burns cleaner.
If you put petrol in a diesel vehicle do not start the engine. Petrol will do serious damage to a diesel engine. You must drain all the petrol out and flush the fuel lines.
