According to Jewish tradition, they should, yes. Jewish males cover their heads with a kippa and/or a hat, as a reminder of the presence of God. This practice is twice mentioned emphatically in the Talmud (Shabbat 156b; Kallah 1:16), in statements dating back 1700 and 1850 years, respectively. Even then, covering one's head is spoken of as an established practice, not something new.

The Yiddish word for kippah, "yarmulkah," is a contraction of the Aramaic "yerei malkah": to be aware of the King.

Note that Jewish married women traditionally cover their hair (Talmud, Ketubot 72b). This is for the purpose of modesty - only her husband should see her beauty - since the hair is considered beautiful (Talmud, Berakhot 24a).

It should be noted that a large percentage of the Jewish community is either non-religious or lives in countries where wearing obvious markers of Judaism (such as a kippah) invite ridicule or danger. As a result, these segments of the Jewish population, the non-religious and the threatened, do not wear kippahs. For those who are able to wear a hat, it serves the same purpose as a kippah.

Jewish women can wear kippot, however, this is not a requirement and is usually only seen amongst Conservative and Reform Jews. Orthodox Jewish women keep their hair covered at all times in public once they're married with either a scarf, hat, or wig so a kippah would be redundant.

Women can wear kippot (pl) if they wish, however, it's not required. While Jewish males starting from childhood are supposed to wear kippot as a reminder that HaShem (The Creator) is always above us, this isn't a requirement for females. However, religiously observant Jewish women do cover their hair with various coverings (hats, wigs, or scarves) once they are married.

In Orthodox and Conservative synagogues, all Jewish men are required to wear a kippah. In Reform synagogues it varies, but it is usually optional.

In Reform and most Conservative synagogues, women are also permitted to wear them.

Traditionally, men wear the kippah and women don't. This is not to say that

in 2011, you won't find Jewish men who don't and Jewish women who do.

Jews do not generally wear anything specifically for the purpuse of showing that they are Jews. During the Holocaust, they were forced to wear yellow stars with the word JEW on them to show that they were Jews. Most Jews wear the same things non-Jews wear. Among the Orthodox, some women wear long sleeve shirts, with long skirts that cover their legs. Married women usually cover their hair in public. Orthodox women are forbidden to wear trousers. Orthodox Men wear a kippah or yarmulke on their heads (though many non-orthodox men also wear them in the synagogue) and some also wear another hat over their kippah. Under their shirts, men wear a garment called tzeetzeet katan or tzitzis, which is similar to an undershirt with special fringes at the bottom. The fringes may be exposed or tucked in, according to the community. Modern Orthdox Men generally dress exactly the same as non-Jewish men, with the exception of the kippah and the tzeetzeet (with the fringes tucked in). There are also other ritual garments associated with specific events and holidays.
