yes, they need to know if your legal to work the amount of hours they require. the younger u are the less your able to do.
No, they can not ask your age or date of birth on a job application, nor can they ask what year you attended high school or graduated from high school, because that could actually tell them how old you are. These are considered to be illegal questions. However , they can ask if you are over a certain age, like: Are you over 18? Those fall under a protected clause, and pertains to your civil rights. The only time this can take place is after they have hired you, on your employee paperwork.

∙ 18y agoYes, there are laws both federal and state that stipulate persons of specfied ages can or cannot work in certain business or areas of a business. For example, if someone who is under the state's legal age pertaining to alcohol and applies for a position in a food establishment where alchohol is served. Yes, if you're under 40, for the reasons Macky gave above. No, if you're over 40, because the law prevents discrimination based on age.

No, if that were so, then they should just ask if you are over 16, or 18, or 25, or whatever. When employers won't let you submit an application without your high school graduation year, it is probably to see how old you are.

∙ 13y agoIn the USA it is highly illegal to ask an employee their age if you are their employer. If you are their co-worker, this is probably not a huge ordeal.
