Tears contain both salt and components that actively fight against microorganisms of all kinds. Out of all the microbes that your eyes come in contact with nearly constantly, only a few can survive long enough or in sufficient quantities to cause an infection.

Fortunately HIV cannot be transmitted through tears. HIV is transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, vaginal fluid or breast milk. HIV only is transmitted by these fluids because they have a high concentration of white blood cells that HIV uses to replicate.
