Yes you can. The main routes of exposure from lead is ingestion or inhalation that is absorbed by the gut. Wearing a respirator and washing afterwards greatly reduces immediate exposure. But keep the work area clean to avoid contaminating the rest of the house. An even worse exposure comes from burning/torching the lead paint because it becomes a gas/fume and is highly absorbed through the lungs. Keep heat guns on low temperature and do not use a propane torch.

Lead paint is extremely dangerous and the Consumer Product Safety Commission claims that approximately one out of 11 children in the America have high concentrations of lead in their bloodstream.

Before the mid 1970's most homes were painted with lead based paints both for the interiors and exteriors. Now so much of this old lead paint is cracking and peeling and becoming increasingly dangerous to children even though in 1978 the Government banned its use. Anyone who comes in contact with lead dust runs the risk of a high concentration of lead.

Lead paint contamination in children can cause a wide range of health problems including: hearing loss, severe and chronic and brain damage.

Lead Paint can be chemically removed or encapsulated. Leaders in the field of lead paint removal are Peel Away Paint Remover and for lead paint encapsulation Lead Stop is highly regarded.

Although a single touch of a painted surface is insufficient to cause most people harm there is no known lower limit to the level of exposure to lead that does no harm. Paint, for instance, might be hazardous once it begins to produce dust that can be inhaled but it appears to be difficult to be certain. Please see the link.

What is white lead?

White lead is lead carbonate. The name "white lead" is also used to describe a lead-containing white paint that was often used as a primer coat on metal. In this context, "red lead" was the red-colored lead-containing primer. White lead is a pigment composed of Lead carbonate and Lead hydroxide. It is used as a rust preventive and it used to be used in house paint until it was recognized that exposure to the old powdering paint and chips created a lead poisoning hazard to people.

When did they have lead paint?

What are the symptons of lead paint poisoning?

You may not notice any symptoms at first. The effects are easy to miss and may seem related to other conditions.QUOTED FROM WebMD"You may not notice any symptoms at first. The effects are easy to miss and may seem related to other conditions. In children, symptoms can include:Slightly lower intelligence and smaller size compared to children of the same age.Behavior problems, such as acting angry, moody, or hyperactive.Learning problems.Lack of energy, and not feeling hungry. In adults, lead poisoning can cause:Changes in behavior, mood, personality, and sleep patterns.Memory loss and trouble thinking clearly.Weakness and muscle problems.Headaches.Severe cases can cause seizures, paralysis, and coma.Nausea can also be a symptom in adults who are working to strip lead-based paint and creating fine lead dust and fumes. Safe lead-paint removal methods are becoming more and more available to eliminate this poisoning. Speedheaterâ„¢ Infrared Paint Remover controls dust and does not release toxic lead fumesALL children living in buildings built before 1978 should have their blood tested regularly for lead. Their body organs (especially their brain and nervous system) are developing and can be irreversibly damaged unless treatment is given to eliminate the lead immediately.

Why are household paints and petrol now lead free?

Lead Paints and Leaded GasLead is a serious health hazard. It can cause a myriad of health problems, (kidney failure, pulmonary, cardiac disease, brain atrophy/damage, and so on. It is still a problem for many people especially children, living in low-income substandard housing. The switch from leaded petrol to unleaded petrol was due to the introduction of catalytic converters in the exhaust systems in the early 1970s. Lead based anti-knock compounds would contaminate the catalyst in the catalytic converter by leaving a thin coating of lead on or reacting with catalyst rendering it ineffective and ultimately causing the converter to clog. Older vehicles without converters were allowed to continue using leaded fuel until it was phased out in the mid 1980s.The thought that this lead was also getting into our air and contributing to the build-up in our bodies was not considered until later. In the mid 1990s, imported vinyl mini-blinds were found to be another source of lead in the home. Lead is added to stabilize the plastic used in the mini-blinds. Over time this plastic deteriorates from sunlight and heat exposure to form lead dust on the surface of the blind.Lead-based paint application was outlawed in the USA in 1978. Many European countries outlawed it decades before that. That said, old homes build and painted before 1978 in the US are likely to have lead paint. The older the building, the higher the incidence. Lead-based paint IS NOT JUST A PROBLEM in LOW INCOME HOUSING!! Historically, lead poisoning has been highest and most damaging to kids in buildings which are not well maintained and in which the paint is deteriorating and chipping off. Since many young couples are buying older homes or other folks have bought them to restore, lead paint poisoning has shifted to be more prevalent in other economic categories.Lead paint causes serious learning disabilities and other irreversible neurological damage in children. Schools noticed an increase in learning disabilities in young kids and anger and violence in teens. Blood testing revealed lead poisoning as often present. Many public health programs focus specifically on testing kids, replacing old windows and doors, and public education for all socio-economic classes. In adults, it can cause permanent damage to organs and even sexual dysfunctions. In 2010 the EPA enacted the Repair, Renovation, and Painting (RRP) law requiring contractors disturbing more than 6 sq. ft of lead paint to use rigid lead dust and fume containment procedures. Home and building remodeling is the largest cause of lead poisoning in America. In addition, anywhere in a building where friction is created between surfaces painted with lead paint (such as doors and windows) invisible lead dust is created. It is NOT that kids chew on window sills! The dust created drops to the floor and kids ingest in from hand contact on the floor. Lead paint poisoning is totally preventable. America needs to wake up and demand that contractors use lead-safe work practices on old homes and public buildings. See www.leadsafeamerica.org and www.epa.gov/lead

Did Duron Paint contain lead in 1975?

Most paint companies had stopped using lead in their paint at that time, however, never assume that paint is lead free. Use a lead paint test to determine if lead if present prior to sanding or scraping.

Can you get lead poisoning from touching the door knob?

It would be unusual to get lead poisoning from touching a door knob. In theory, if the door knob had been painted with a paint that contains lead, and if the paint was now flaking off and gets onto your hand, and if you fail to wash your hands before eating, and you get flakes of lead based paint into your food and eat it, then yes, you could get lead poisoning.

What health hazard does removal of lead paint create?

Scraping or sanding lead paint creates large amounts of dust that can poison people in the home. This dust can stay around long after the work is completed. In addition, heating lead paint can release lead into the air.

Effects of lead poisoning?

Lead poisoning can cause brain damage and even death. We used to put lead in our gasoline and in our paint but have learned about its dangers and stopped those practices.

How do you get lead poisoning?

There are several ways to get lead poisoning. The metal lead is taken into the body by 2different routes. They are inhaling lead, usually in the form of lead dust, and by ingesting lead- you swallow something with lead on it- or in it. Lead has been used not only as the pure metal lead in things like fishing sinkers, plumbing solder, bullets, etc, but also as an oxide of lead in older paints, mixed in plastics, etc. When working with lead, or products that contain lead, it is important to avoid inhaling dusts or vapors from the work. A respirator that is rated to protect against dusts should be used (the 99 cent dust masks do NOT do this) clothing that is contaminated with lead dust should be washed separately from other clothing. After working with materials that contain lead, WASH exposed skin with soap and water before eating, smoking or drinking. Lead paint is especially dangerous to small children- the paint may flake and chip off- and lead causes the paint to have a sweet taste. Lead based paint should be removed or covered. Do a computer search for EPA lead paint for some good information. There are simple kits to test paint for lead available at most home improvement stores. Lead is NOT absorbed through intact skin.
