Who is Peter Solis Nery?
Peter Solis Nery was born on January 6, 1969. He is a poet, fictionist and author from Dumangas, Iloilo, Philippines. He has won major acclaim for his poetry and short stories in his mother tongue, the Hiligaynon, winning such prestigious literary contests as the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the Cultural Center of the Philippines Literary Grant, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts all-Western Visayas Literary Contest. His screenplays have also won the Philippine Centennial Literary Prize of 1998, the 2001 Cinemanila International Film Festival Scriptwriting Competition, and the Film Development Foundation of the Philippines' Screenwriting Contest. Author of 13 books and erstwhile columnist and editor of Iloilo-based newspapers such as The News Today, The Guardian, and Panay News, Nery briefly appears in Tikoy Aguiluz's film on cybersex, "www.xxx.com". Presently, Nery works as an orthopedics nurse in a Los Angeles, California hospital. He has just finished translation work on his groundbreaking 100 erotic sonnets in the Hiligaynon. *** After graduating high school from Dumangas Polytechnic College in 1986, Peter took his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Univeristy of the Philippines in the Visayas where he was named Most Outstanding Graduate of 1990. He also received an Associate degree in Philosophy from the SVD Christ the King Mission Seminary in Quezon City in 1992. In 2004, he was conferred a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Negros College in Bacolod City. Peter has been employed as a teacher of Biology and English in Macau (1993-1995), of English and Literature at Santa Maria Catholic School in Iloilo (1997), and as instructor of Philosophy at the UP in the Visayas (1998). He was a popular columnist in several newspapers in Iloilo City, among them The News Today (2000-2003), The Guardian (2004-2005), and Panay News (2006). He maintains a weekly column in Panay News, "The Charmed Life of Peter Solis Nery." As a literary writer, Peter is multi-awarded having won the historic Philippine Centennial Literary Prize (1998) and several Palanca Awards. Currently he works as an orthopedic nurse in Los Angeles, California. Peter is the eldest son of Cecilino "Boy" Nery and Thelma Solis Nery, both retired teachers. The family owns the building PRIMA City in the heart of Dumangas, Iloilo, in the Philippines.
