Mazda Miatas require a very specific battery, due to their size constraints. The most common replacement is the WestCo Battery (visit WestCoBattery.com).

It is a sealed battery and has small connections for hoses to be connected to vent outside the car. When replacing the battery, do so in a well ventilated area. If you are replacing a stock battery, the connection for these ventilation hoses may be in a different location on the new battery. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a few feet of rubber hose to replace it if necessary.

The battery is located in the trunk, underneath the carpet.

  • Use a small, 10mm socket or wrench to loosen and remove the battery cable connected to the GROUND (-) post.
  • Use a small, 10mm socket or wrench to loosen and remove the battery cable connected to the Power (+) post.
  • The battery is held down by a bar running across the top of the battery. Before you remove the bolt to take off the bar, note where the hold down bar is mounted inside the fender (there will be a few different holes).
  • Disconnect the rubber vacuum tubing.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Replace the battery.
  • Connect the ventilation hose to the new connections. Use the new hose if needed, make sure it does not get kinked.
  • Reconnect the cross bar holding the battery down.
  • Connect the Power (+) post and tighten it.
  • Connect the Ground (-) post and retighten it.

What kind of battery fits into a 1990 Miata?

The best OEM-style battery for a Mazda Miata is the WestCo battery, made specifically for the car. They are of compact size and sealed, since they are located in the trunk. Note that all of the Miata sealed batteries are have small hoses connected on the _ and - sides of the battery. This allows any battery fumes to be ventilated out of the car. An aftermarket sealed battery MAY have these small ports in a different location. You'll just need to go to your local Autoparts store to purchase an extra 1-2' so you can replace the old tubing. Should cost no more than a few dollars. View the related links below for WestCo. This answer is applicable for 1990-2005 Mazda Miatas.
