Yes, especially if you were very early along. An early miscarriage (up to 7 or 8 weeks) would come on and just feel and look like a period with cramps etc.

Somewhere around 25 - 30% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. And of those 40% are when the women did not even realize they were pregnant.

Most women who do not realise they are pregnant think that it is just a "heavy period". No medical intervention is needed for a straight forward miscarriage in the first 8-10 weeks. You will get cramps and bleeding but otherwise should be fine. Most women realise they are pregnant within 6 weeks. Most miscarriages that occur between 4-6 weeks are like a heavy period and no-one knows any better. The only difference you may notice is stronger cramps and for a longer time (ie instead of 8 hours, you cramp for 2 days). The bleeding will be bright red with clumps whereas a normal period may be darker brownish blood and thinner. You may also bleed for seven-10 days instead of 5-7 as is a normal period.

This can be very difficult to answer. There are several factors which indicate a miscarriage. The first sign would be symptoms of pregnancy and a missed period. When a Woman experiences a miscarriage she will experience severe abdominal pain, very sharp pains which radiate all over the abdomen. Very heavy bleeding which then occur a few minutes to several hours after the pain started. During the miscarriage the Embriotic tissue will be expelled. This usually looks like a sac or tissue with veins. The bleeding usually occurs for 9-14 days.

Yes indeed a woman can. Most women who miscarry never knew they were pregnant. Some people say that people are fortunate to know, personally I think that is true. As much as it hurt knowing I miscarried, I have learned from it, and now that I am trying to get pregnant again, I know to be careful.

Hi, I was 8 wks pregnant and have been bleeding all the way thru. The blood was bright red altho i felt no pain throughout. I had been using towels for heavy periods and decided to visit my GP for advice. I was disappointed but unsurprised to be told that lots of women bleed during pregnancy and was advised to simply wait it out. At 6 weeks the bleeding got so bad I was literally sitting on the loo and blood was running out of me. That night it got to the stage that I could tell when it was going to happen and would rush to the loo to pass a large amount of dark red blood. At this stage I still felt no pain. When I passed a few large clots (brussel sprout sized jelly globs, deep red in colour) I assumed I was miscarrying and told my boyfriend that I thought this was it. It was all over. The next day I spoke to a midwife who advised me to go straight to casualty. Once there they referred me to the Early Pregnancy Unit at my local hospital for an ultrasound the next day.

At this stage I just wanted it over. In my mind, my baby had gone already and I just needed to draw a line under it. I had been bleeding for 6 weeks and it was seriously starting to affect my wellbeing. The next day we went to the scan and was amazed to see our baby's heartbeat. They also discovered a heterogenous, an unexplained area of bleed in my uterus. This was unconnected to the baby and was explained to be a "wound" which was trying to heal itself but due to the wet conditions it was struggling. Good news but I still didn't allow myself to fully believe everything would be ok.

Last night I started to feel unwell. Stomach cramps, feeling uncomfortable, nothing helped and I felt the urge to sit on the loo. After half hour the cramps got worse and I started to pass large clots, dark red that looked like liver and a lot of blood. I started to vomit at the same time as larger and larger lumps of jelly passed through my body. I felt inside and my cervix was open more than normal and I knew that this time it was it. The pain, the lumps, all of a sudden I passed a large lump and the pain immediately lifted. I had to look so i grabbed a rubber glove and fished out the lump (sorry but it's the graphic details that helped me). It was mainly a large lump of liver looking substance the size of a flat hand with a white "thing" attached to it. It looked like a white, tubey mass, jelly like with strands and I assumed that this was my baby.

Today I have rung the Early Pregnancy Unit and am booked in for a scan tomorrow. In my heart I know that it is all over but we have had such a roller coaster pregnancy up to now that I can't detach from the slight hope that, by some miracle, all will be well.

Today I feel ok. A few twinges in my belly but nothing to moan about, my boobs are still agony to touch and the bleeding is so much better. Not a lot on the towel but still there when I wipe.

I really hope this helps someone like me. I take the view that it wasn't meant to be but the pain isn't any less. See what happens at the scan tomorrow.

The miracle of life and death.

Michelle
