All Fentanyl Patches (Duragesic or generics) are Transdermal in nature, meaning they are applied to the upper torso area and the drug is dispersed through a membrane via the skin. The dose is regulated by body heat.
Cutting the patch and ingesting the gel by any method is quick way to get yourself killed. Most people are not tolerant to the extremely massive dose of Fentanyl one would get if the patch were compromised - the dose is meant to be delivered steadily over a 48-72 hour period. Even extremely high tolerance patients like myself can be affected if body heat rises fast and the dosage regulation is increased. It's like being trapped in a loop you can't get out of - you know something is wrong, but are powerless to do anything about it unless someone recognizes you need help. Unchecked, in people with less tolerance Respiratory Arrest and heart failure will occur within minutes - if you're lucky. There are things worse than death.
Not really. the gel is too thick. Any needle that you would want to use would have to be way large of a gauge to suck up the gel and I haven't read anyway to break up the gel that is user friendly
In short, yes.
Fentanyl not only can be but is commonly used intrathecally. It is the preferred agent (along with perhaps sufentanil) when concern about rostral (toward the brain) spread exists. It is "off label" for intrathecal use, but has been given in probably millions of doses in this manner.
"Off-label" is a term which generates much confusion, as, without the ability to use medications off-label would grind much successful, ethical, high quality medical practice to a halt.
I and many physicians have used and will continue to use fentanyl in this manner for many years in many patients until and if any research indicates otherwise.
Yes, you can use morphine intravenously and it will show rapid effect. On the other hand, morphine will show slower effect if it's given intramuscularly.
Technically it is possible. SWIM wanted to attempt it but got nothing but serious road blocks from people that know that by attempting to inject it you can easily die. DO NOT ATTEMPT IT!
"Transdermal" means "through the skin". These cannot be injected.
The peak of pain relief provided by the Fentanyl transdermal system is between 12 and 18 hours after application.
Technically, no.
Any drug with a transdermal delivery system, fentanyl most likely.
No - they only contain Fentanyl in a transdermal release suspension gel.
No! You can not eat it with Fiber, with fruit, with nuts, with anything! Eating fentanyl will kill you!
Anywhere from a few weeks, months, or years. It's all dependent on the patient and pain relief requirements.
The oral drug Fentanyl is made by many different companies, but Duragesic (brand name for Fentanyl Transdermal patches) is made and distributed by Ortho-McNeil/Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
Duragesic transdermal system. Manufactured by Janssen-Cilag and available in 12, 25, 50, 75 and 100 micrograms/hour strength.
Absolutely - Hydrocodone and Oxycodone are typically prescribed along with Duragesic as breakthrough pain meds.
Transdermal fentanyl patches (Duragesic) are a common example of a long-acting opioid drug often used for cancer pain management.
Only Sandoz and Watson have the gel mallinckrodt Teva, Mylan and even the brand Duragesic (new type) are all the plastic polymer
