Do you leave the solar pool cover on an above ground pool while the pool filter is running?

Yes.
The filter will pull water into the skimmer from under the cover and send it back into the pool through the return line.
In fact, when using a solar cover the pool will warm slightly faster if the water is circulating (the solar cover is continuously heating all of the water rather than a just a small layer of already warm water right under the cover). Heat flows faster the greater the temperature difference.

∙ 15y agoAs I read your question - - - you want to put a solar cover over the filter.
If you actually mean can you put the solar cover on the pool surface and run the filter and pump too. BTW, the filter does not move the water, the PUMP moves the water. The pump is the only piece of equipment that you would be used to run th ewater thru the filter. The pump is like the heart of the equipment pad.
Then yes you can do both. The solar cover when installed as it should be - on the water - has no signifigence with regard to the filter ( the large tank).
The purpose of running the pump either with the cover on or off would be to move or circulate the water. With a solar cover on the surface of the water - only the top two feet of the water is warmed. The rest of the pool remains cooler. Circulating the water would move that warm water and mix it with the cooler water. Think about it.

∙ 13y agoI always left the solar cover on the pool except when I was swimming in it. The solar cover provided enough heat so I did not need to turn on my heater. If the heater pushes the solar cover aside, remove the solar cover from that part of the pool.

∙ 14y agoYes.. As long as no part of the cover can get sucked into your skimmer box and block it. Ensure the cover does not protrude into the skimmer box area and it will be fine.

∙ 10y agoChemicals in the water will degrade the plastic and diminish the life span of the solar cover, you can do it, but storing the cover dry is the best solution if you want it to last.

What do you do about your above ground pool while you are on vacation. Do you cover and not worry about the pump - its only for 4 days?
I clean my filter and skimmer basket and leave my pump running. I do not cover my pool. I guess it could depend on the weather in your area and if you have a problem with leaves getting in your pool.

If it's not coming from the valve cover gaskets, could be from the rear rail of the intake manifold, or maybe it's from the oil filter seal, or possibly the pipe plug above the oil filter.

Your regular cover won't heat the pool, it will hold the heat, but it will not heat it up. You need a solar blanket if you are looking for something to warm your pool.

If its a cartridge filter. Cut of the water from the skimmer as well as possible then take the upper cover of the cartridge filter take out the element and hose it down. Put it back together. start the pump often there is a valve on the top of these to let excess air out, open it until water starts to run out of it.
