It may depend on the city too. In our city we can move out 17 no matter what the parents say. My friend moved out at 17 and moved in with a 25yr old guy. You will have to look in less disirable neighborhoods for an apartment. Because most require references. If you have a friend to move in with you should be OK, but like I said you can't get into trouble or do anything to get your friend into trouble.

• I can promise you there are plenty of parents who would not consider it 'pointless' to have their 17-year-old runaway child returned home. OP, you should know your parents well enough to know what their reaction would be. Would they insist on having you brought back home?
