Yes, but I do not know of an adapter per se. Expose your 220V power lines. There should be two hot wires (black and red). They can technically be split apart and wired to two separate 110V outlets, but the neutral wire would have to be shared (not split, shared), same with the ground wire.

AnswerDon't do this. It is a hack and doesn't meet code. Just run the right wire.

No. The device will only have half the voltage it needs and will not operate properly. Follow the ratings on the device.

Definitely not. The plug would be the wrong type anyway, so there is physical block to doing what is suggested, but other than that excess current would flow, you would hope for the fuse to blow, and if that did not happen the thing could catch fire.

In general the answer is no. This is due to the different pin configuration between 120 volt and 240 volt plugs (caps). This is done for safety reasons so that your question can not happen.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

110 volt and 220 volt is an old standard the manufacturing companies never let go of. The generated voltage has been stepped up to 120 and 240 volts respectively. so Yes 220 volt and 240 volt is the same thing. Always consult a professional when installing electrical equipment.

Does the range receptacle have to be rewired if a gas stove replacement only needs 120 volts?

There is a little adapter which does this for you. It is available in Canada and CSA certified. It is available at Home Depot. Just plug it into the 240 volt outlet and you now have a 120 volt outlet, which is protected by its own internal 15 amp fuse. This device is to be used for one specific use only and that is to safely convert an electric range outlet when a gas ranges is replacing the electric range. Gas ranges need a 120 volt supply to operate and this device is used so that the range receptacle can supply the needed 120 volt supply. See related linksbelow.
