I have a 2002 Galant GTZ - basically the same car. Disconnect the battery cable for a period of time. This will clear out the computer's memory and reset the light. If the light continues to come back on afterwards, then you might want to get it checked. I've done this on my Galant as well as a 1999 Jeep Cherokee and 1999 Dodge Avenger. I think it will work on any car where the engine light doesn't turn off unless externally reset. When I've done it, I've had the battery cable off for as long as overnight and short as 4 or 5 hours. Just depended on when I disconnected it and when I needed to drive it again. May be able to do it for less time. Just need it to be long enough for the computer to lose it's memory. Of course, you'll lose your radio presets as well.
Go to a Mitsubishi Dealership.
You can get the engine unlock code for your Mitsubishi Galant ES 2001 model by accessing the computer at the dealership. This computer unlocks the entire engine and computer on the car.
Take it to the dealership.
Likely if it's the same engine, but best ask a mitsu dealership, they can compare part numbers
How do I get the code
If the 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage won't start and has the service engine light on, you probably have an issue with a sensor. This could be a problem with an electrical or oxygen sensor.
With, or without a Jaws Of Life tool?
DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE
A service engine light can come on for many reasons. Someone can take the vehicle to the dealership or auto parts store to have them read the code and let them know what the issue is.
service engine soon you have a problem with your car that your ECM has detected
Chances are, if it has a fuel injected engine, it does. You can always ask at a dealership or service center, as well.
Call the service department of a Ford dealership with the VIN number and they can tell you.
