Yes. The calcium in the tub is mainly Calcium Carbonate mixed with a few other mineral salts (copper oxide - give it a greenish hue, etc). CaCO3 reacts readily with acids (bicarb of soda is CaCO3 - mix it with vinegar or lemon juice - in the sink). A stronger acid (car battery acid) would work better and faster but are harder to get hold of and more precautions must be taken.

Also, most dishwasher detergents contain 'limescale removers' which act in much the same way.

Is it safe to mix vinegar with dishwasher detergent?

Yes, I do it all the time. I usually throw in a tablet and a cup full of vinegar in my dishwasher. I find it boosts the cleaning power of the detergent and I get much cleaner dishes as a result. I also use it as my rinse aid. With this combination, I find that I don't have to run empty cleaning cycles as I almost never get any buildup from the detergent/dirty dishes. The vinegar not only helps clean the dishes, but it also keeps your dishwasher clean.

How much vinegar do you use to clean house?

Generally it is best to mix 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water, but you can use more vinegar for better cleaning power. I generally use straight vinegar to clean bathrooms, kitchen counters and when I clean the dishwasher every month, but for general cleaning I have a spray bottle of half water have vinegar and it usually does the trick.

How do you clean dishwasher out when you don't use it often and you put your hand wash dishes back in the dishwasher and there is black forming back on the clean dish?

I suggest running the dishwasher with detergent and about a quarter cup of laundry bleach. Let run the full cycle at high heat. Even if a dishwasher is not used often there is still moisture in it, the black is most likely some type of mold.

How do you clean the dishwasher filter?

If your dishwasher has self cleaning filters, there is no need to clean them. If not, you can do it yourself. Cleaning the filters is important to keep it in good condition. There is no need to clean it often. The hot water and detergent will dissolve most or all food particle. Don’t ignore the filters either. They sit snug right below the wash arm. Most are made of aluminum and can be pulled up to clean. Others need to be unlocked first. The most important thing to remember is BE GENTLE. Aluminum bends easy.
