There are 3 main reasons. ( There are more though..)

=]

1. Trade. There is a reciprocity between US and Canada. So they are trading with less or no tax. This means that things came in cheaper for Canadians or people from West Canada. When US had a war ( between North and South) Britain supported the South side. This means Canada, too supported the South side. Sadly, the South side lost so now there is a weird connection between US and Britain.

- Because of this. US called off the Reciprocity between the two countries. This means more expensive goods.

2. Fenians. The Fenians... I believe are Irish Americans. They were upset because British took over their land. They decided to invade Canada's border. People along the border lived in fear. If Canada East confed... Then they would have a bigger army.

3. A railway!!! Goods come from the British. Since Canada East isn't anywhere near Britain... The goods come from US, than from the US railways, they export the goods back to Canada. What's so bad about that you may ask... well they had HIGH taxes. If there was a railway across Canada, Then goods wouldn't have to go through US.

There were economic benefits if they formed confederation with Canada

What were the pro's and con's of confederation for each colony?

SOme of the Pros and Cons of Canadian Confederation are : Canada would be United as one Country and would be given the name Canada. Not everyone agreed with the British North American act. Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland both did not want any part of it and did not join until 1871 and 1949. The french speaking population was also divided but they were divided after Confederation. I hope this helps :0)

Disadvantages for Nova Scotia to join confederation?

Saskatchewan didn't really have much choice so pros out weigh cons. It was either become a province or stay part of the Northwest territories. There were those in Saskatchewan that did not want to be sold or transferred from HBC control to Canada and they did speak out, some openly rebelled. The military response from Canada made them an offer they could not refuse. A big negative would be that Saskatchewan has put more into Confederation than they have gotten back. Canada believes Saskatchewan owes them everything, after all Canada created, owns, Saskatchewan. The down side of that has been many federal policies directed at the Prairie Provinces meant to transfer Western wealth east. This has been possible in part due to the lack of equal and effective representation in Confederation, another negative. They could have stayed as part of the Northwest Territories but that would have meant even less representation and more exploitation.

What are pros and cons of confederate?

Pros- America is less likely to be able to take over all of the colonies together in confederation, than they would be to take over one colony alone. Also, the people who organized confederation would pay for your debt. There would also be a railway connecting all of the colonies of Confederation together, so that they could easily go to and from the colonies, instead of walking. The system of government is also very good to, and there are some responsible leaders. Cons- If you joined Confederation, you lose your identity as a lone colony, and you can't make AS MANY of your own decisions. You can still make some decisions though.
