Cant open ford explorer 1997 with the key fob so cant start car either because of imobilizer any ideas?

You should be able to unlock the door with the key, when you do that it should deactivate the immobilizer. Sometimes you have to hold the key in the unlock position for a couple seconds or double turn it that way to get it to deactivate. Manufacturers understand that batteries die. There's always a direct way to work around something that is controlled by a wireless battery powered device.
