Plasma membrane serves as a barrier between cell and the external environment (like a boundary). It selectively conduct transport of molecules across the membrane. Membrane is made up a phospholipid bilayer that has hydrophobic tail (facing each other inside) and hydrophilic head(projected towards polar environment). Membrane also contains integral and peripheral proteins and oligosaccharides.

Another name for plasma membrane?

A cell membrane is also known as a plasma membrane or cytoplasmic membrane. The cell membrane separates the interior of a cell from its outside environment. The main function of a cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings.
