Cloud seeding attempts to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances (e.g. microscopic silver iodide crystals, dry ice) into the air that serve as cloud condensation or ice nuclei. The usual intent is to increase precipitation (e.g rain, snow), but hail and fog suppression are also widely practiced in airports.

Cloud seeding substances may be dispersed by aircraft or by devices located on the ground (e.g. generators, anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers).

There are still questions as to its actual effectiveness and some of the substances used present possible health hazards.

They inject silver nitrate into the clouds either by aircraft or smudge pots similar to what they use in orange groves when the temperatures drop below freezing to save the crops, but these do not use silver nitrate. Cloud seeding was popular in the 1970's to increase snowfall in the Rocky Mountains in order to produce more water for the western states and especially the Colorado River from which Las Vegas, Nevada, San Bernardino and Riverside California gets it water supply. However, it also caused increased snow and rain in eastern Colorado and Kansas, causing some areas to flood. Therefore it was stopped. Many other countries still use these cloud seeding methods.
