Being the oldest religion, Hinduism has experimented with all kinds of Codes of Conduct and has found that they have certain drawbacks.
DRAWBACKS OF CODE OF CONDUCT:
1. It makes life artificial, rigid and inefficient
2. It reduces the quality of life
3. It isolates the followers from rest of the people
4. It is not possible to write a code of conduct that is beneficial to all.
5. To be universal and eternal, it has to be vague and should be left to interpretation.
6. It needs monitoring, punishment, amendments
THE HINDU EQUIVALENT OF CODE OF CONDUCT:
Hinduism is three dimensional.
The dimensions are,
1. THE VERTICAL DIMENSION
In this dimension are the seven basic Hindu gods.
They are,
1. Indra - god of dreaming
2. Shakti - god of illusion
3. Brahma - god of creativity
4. Vishnu - god of stabilization
5. Shiva - god of determination
6. Shani - god of status alteration
7. Yama - god of compulsion
THE LEFT - RIGHT DIMENSION:
In this dimension are the four Varnas
1. Brahmana Varna - for ideal conditions
2. Kshatriya Varna - for normal conditions
3. Vaishya Varna - for tolerable conditions
4. Shudra Varna - for chaotic conditions
THE BACK - FRONT DIMENSION:
In this dimension are the four kinds of time
1. Eternal time
2. Natural time
3. Virtual time
4. Transient time.
Under chaotic conditions a Hindu uses
1. Shudra Varna, as it gives him maximum freedom
2. He uses Yama for activity and Indra for rest, as both are the most powerful, though risky
3. He uses transient time, as more often than not, things go wrong.
Under ideal conditions a Hindu becomes one with the supreme god Brahman.
ADVANTAGES OF THE HINDU APPROACH:
1. It enables us to live the way we are created to
2. It makes Hinduism eternal
3. It enables selective progress of suffering people
4. It can't be banned
5. It makes it impossible to persecute Hindus
6. It gives the best quality of life
7. It makes Hinduism totally self sufficient
Therefore, Hinduism is not in need of a code of conduct.
Hindu concept of right conduct is known as Dharma. Dharma (righteous living) means the deeds one must do or the duties assigned by God.
