the theme of this book is no matter what happens (in her case life changing events) always keep your head up .

she constantly was pushed down and tortured .

in certain points her main goal changes which changes the theme but during the duration of the time she spent on the plantation her goal was to escape and she followed through on her personal quest.

which lead to the theme being "keep moving ,perseverance ALWAYS pays off"
