All of Africa was claimed by European nations at one point or another; the only exceptions are Liberia and Ethiopia. Liberia was technically colonized by the United States and Ethiopia remained independent, although the nation was invaded by Italy.

Several European nations colonized America. Spain colonized Florida and parts of the Southwest. England colonized the East Coast and further inland. France colonized the Mississippi River area. The Netherlands colonized the area around New York, but were driven out by England. Russian colonized Alaska.

While some countries (including France, Spain, and Portugal) had colonized parts of Africa as far back as the 1500s, the majority of the colonization by the European powers occurred in the mid-to late 1800s. To a certain extent, the Dutch were apart of this colonization as they formed a group of other Europeans who settled in what was South Africa. They were called Afrikaners.

There are 54 countries and and about 1.11 billion people in Africa. Many factors influence the reason there are so many languages. As in other parts of the world, different countries speak different languages. Many people came to Africa to colonise it, bringing new languages. There are many tribes in Africa, many having their own languages or dialects of languages. For these and many other reasons, many languages have developed in Africa.
The European nations had guns and cannons. Other people had swords and clubs. It's not hard to see who had the upper hand. That is why the Americas, Africa, Australia, and many parts of Aisa were controled by European powers for a couple hundred years.
Most European countries colonised various parts of the world at one time or another. Principally Britain; France; Spain & Portugal, they established Empires in Asia, Afirica & the Americas. Virtually all of Africa & South America were dominated by European powers.
