Manifest Destiny

The term manifest destiny means the belief or doctrine, held chiefly in the middle and latter part of the 19th century, that it was the destiny of the U.S. to expand its territory over the whole of North America and to extend and enhance its political, social, and economic influences.

In short, it means the ideal that America would be the most powerful country in the world.

It also means "God given right." This was believed by many people, and the idea behind it was the right to expand the US nation and take land.
