Science fiction is a genre of fiction that involves future technology or things that are interesting in theory but we wouldn't want to happen in reality. It usually contains a message to the readers, a theme, warning of the harmful consequences of the excessive use of technology.

--- adding ---

Hard Science Fiction is generally an attempt to predict what inventions will occur next and what their social impact will be on the human race. A good example would be "what if there were robots to do all our housework " , and then you get a movie like "I Robot" staring Will Smith showing half the population out of work because all the dead end minimum wage jobs got taken up.

Not to say that would really happen, merely the author speculating on the consequences.
Science fiction is a genre which is based on things that are in the future or that are not real, such as aliens, telepathy, etc.

Any work of fiction that involves the scientific method or facts derived from it. Usually the story will seek to interpolate and extrapolate on these facts to effect speculative conditions on the known universe. Another allowable genera of science fiction is the 'What if' probability. Here we allow one (or more) facets of science to be something other than what it is and interpolate and extrapolate on that.

In very generic terms, the meaning of Science Fiction is to tell a fictional (untrue) story based on some sort of science. There are many types of Science Fiction. Some stories are based on "hard" science, where nothing is put in that has been proven untrue thus far. Others are much less scientific, but still have to do with some sort of imagined technology (like time travel), rather than "magic," which is the realm of fantasy.

Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens, and paranormal abilities. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one

purpose of science fiction, making it a "literature of ideas".

I would rather describe science fiction as "The cosmic range of imagination" of the Film Director. Science fiction films like ET, Jurasic Park by Stephen Spielberg highlight the Director's adroitness in depicting the past scenario of millions of years back, and his imagination how the extra terrestrial objects look at.

(alternative answer) Science fiction is fiction that is based upon scientific speculation, which often involves space travel, time travel, or other forms of advanced technology.

Science fiction allows authors to show "what if." They can warn us of possible outcomes if we take technology too far in a certain direction. They let us explore humanity through the eyes of robots, androids, or aliens. They compare how we have treated minorities to how we might treat aliens or how aliens might treat us.

The origin of science fiction is when people started to say "What if?" Mary Shelley said "What if the dead could come back to life?" and wrote Frankenstein. Jules Verne said "What if we had rockets that could go to the moon? And what if we had submarines that could sail under the ocean waves?"
