Andrew Jackson could be described as both a rightist and a nationalist. Jackson believed in supporting an ancient regime, where kings ruled the land, which could be considered a rightist attitude. He also believed in the abilities of the common man which could be considered a nationalist attitude.
He generally favored states' rights and considered his party to be the continuation
of Jefferson's as opposed to Hamilton's federalism. However, he felt the federal
union was absolutely essential to everyone's well-being. He vigorously fought the
idea of nullification and the even more radical idea that state had the right to
secede from the union.
Jackson tried to keep the union together when South Carolina refused to accept the Tariff of Abominations and threatened secession.
He was the people's "common man" president, he did everything in his power to keep the Union together, he tried doing things that would help his country also.
