President Obama said in his book The Audacity of Hope he did not grow up in a religious home. He was baptized in 1988 at the Trinity Church and was an active member for 20 years. He now attends services at the Evergreen Chapel at Camp David.

He claims to be a Christian because he is a Christian: he believes in Jesus as his savior, and he accepts the theology of mainstream Protestant Christianity. The problem for some people who ask this question is they think only a certain kind of Christian (conservative, evangelical) is a "real" Christian. Mr. Obama, by most accounts, is from a moderate denomination; his wife was raised Methodist, and his maternal grandparents (who raised him) were also from a Protestant background (some sources say Methodist, others say Unitarian). But just because he is not a conservative Christian, that does not mean his faith is not real or that he is secretly some other religion. The Bible says only God can judge, so therefore, it is between Mr. Obama and God whether his faith is sufficient or not. It should not be something for us to worry about.
