The lyrics are:
Some times in our lives, we all have pain
We all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there’s always tomorrow
Lean on me, when you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend
I’ll help you carry on
For it won’t be long‘
Til I’m gonna need
Somebody to lean on
Please swallow your pride
If I have faith you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won’t let show
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
Lean on me, when you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend
I’ll help you carry on
For it won’t be long‘Til I’m gonna need
Somebody to lean on
You just call on me brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand
We all need somebody to lean on
If there is a load you have to bear
That you can’t carry
I’m right up the road
I’ll share your load
If you just call me (call me)
If you need a friend (call me) call me uh huh(call me)
if you need a friend (call me)If you ever need a friend (call me)
Call me (call me) call me (call me) call me(Call me) call me (call me)
if you need a friend(Call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me) call me (call me)
Commentary: In 1972, the United States was weary of the Vietnam War (954 – April 30, 1975), and other crises (in society, government, etc.). Anti-war ballads and inspirational songs of the 1960s brought younger people together to fight "Uncle Sam" and "the Establishment", but... there was a lot of chaos and uncertainty. But artists like Bill Withers reminded listeners that we could simply help each other, one on one: "Call me... if you need a friend..." The simple piano arrangement and clarity of Withers' voice brought this song to the lips of most teenagers growing up then. Of course, familiarity breeds humor in place of contempt-- soon, the song's lyrics became a source of amusement--for some people. Yet, it's message remained CLEAR: "We all need somebody to lean on..." And, just as poignant in 1972, the message remains true then, now, and in the future.
Don McLean, Sammy Davis, Jr., Bill Withers, Gilbert O' Sullivan, Mac Davis, Johnny Nash and Billy Paul each had Number 1 hits for at least three weeks in 1972.
