The pale blue dot is a photograph of Earth taken by Voyager 1, six billion kilometers (3.8 billion miles) from the Earth [See related link] The photo was requested by Carl Sagan but was not first authorised. However, as the spacecraft had completed it's intended mission, the last drops of fuel were used up to turn the cameras towards Earth. See related link for the photo.
