Most definitely. He was famously distant, described by one acquaintance as being as cold as a fish on ice in a market, but once he got to know a person he formed a lasting bond.

Among his band members he was especially close to Trigger Alpert, Tex Beneke, and Ray McKinley. Beneke was somewhat of a "pet" and was accused of being protected by Miller, but on the rare occasions when he did mess up, Miller could be as unforgiving as with anyone else who didn't do their job well.

He was also close to Cecil Madden, his producer for BBC broadcasts in England. Madden later helped The Beatles to fame, was knighted, and became head of the BBC, but always considered his greatest regret to be his inability to keep Miller from taking that last flight in December 1944.

In the most general sense of the word, yes. According to Glenn Miller's biographer George T. Simon, Miller's austere early life and strict upbringing made it difficult for him to form friendships. He was personally close to just a few people in the band, in particular trombonist Paul Tanner, trumpeter Zeke Zarchy, drummer Trigger Alpert, and later on, drummer Ray McKinley. (That explains in large part why Zarchy and Alpert were among his first picks when assembling what became the AAF Orchestra).

His relationship with Tex Beneke was more one of professional respect and admiration. He hired Beneke early on in the civilian band's existence because he was so impressed with Tex's Coleman Hawkins-influenced sax style. Simon's biography indicated that Beneke became a kind of teacher's pet or first among equals in the band, but it had as much to do with Beneke's standout personality as a performer as it did with anything else. Even so, Miller didn't their relationship didn't get in the way of musical standards. Simon describes one incident when Beneke forgot his scores for a performance; Miller put him on a kind of unofficial probation for two weeks as punishment.

There is some very tenuous and unproven speculation that he may have been involved with a French woman during his time leading the AAF Orchestra in England.

Most of the evidence is very circumstantial. For example, his biographer George T. Simon reported that the normally straight-arrow Miller once told him that he was "involved in things he was ashamed of", and "wished he'd never started". There's also the somewhat cryptic exchange between Miller and the German announcer on one of the Propaganda broadcasts aimed into Nazi Germany. Translated into English, it went roughly:

- Major, have you heard anything from your wife recently?

- Yes, a telegram

- What did it say?

- Don't forget that you're still married!

- And what was your reply?

- Telegram received too late.

Was it a joke? Or something darker, hidden by sardonic humor? We'll never know.
