James Garfield was a Brigade Commander at Shiloh. Later at the Battle of Chicakmauga he was General Rosencrans' Chief of Staff. In 1881 he was elected as the 20th US president. He was assassinated a few months later. He was the second US president to be assassinated.

James Garfield entered the union army in August of 1861 as a lieutenant colonel. In November, 1816 he was made a full colonel. In January ,1862 he was promoted to brigadier general and in Sept. 18,1893 was made a major general. He resigned from the army in December, 1863, to take his seat in Congress, having been elected in Nov. 1862.
