Who was Mary Magdalene's sister?

Most evangelists do not tell, and there has been extensive theological discussion which of the several Mary's mentioned all over the New Testament actually was Mary Magdalene. John 11:1-2 seems to indicate that she was the sister of Lazarus (the guy who rose from the dead) and Martha.

According to apocryphal writings, Mary was an only child. The sister mentioned in John's description of the crucifixion was Mary of Cleopas. It would have been highly unlikely that Joachim and Anne would have named two daughters Mary. The second Mary was the wife of Cleopas, the brother of Saint Joseph, and Mary's sister-in-law.

It really depends on what is meant by the term 'sister'.

Jesus indicated that ANY who serve God with him are his 'brother, sister, mother' SPIRITUALLY speaking (Mark 3:35)(Matthew 12:50), but it's clear that he also had FLESHLY family who eventually believed that he was indeed the Messiah and listened to him (Matthew 13:55-56)(John 2:12)

The Bible does NOT indicate that Mary Magdalene was Jesus' FLESHLY sister, infact, her name means 'Belonging to Magdala', implying that she may have been from the town of 'Magdala' .

However, she certainly was his 'sister' in a SPIRITUAL sense (Matthew 7:21-23) as she was a faithful fellow worshiper of God. (Luke 8:21)

The only thing the Bible tells us about Mary Magdalene was:

-that she was cured of demon possession by Jesus(Luke 8:2)

-that she was one of the 'women who accompanied Jesus from Galilee'(Matthew 27:55-56/Mark 15:40)

-that she was one of the women who watched as Jesus died (John 19:25)

-that she brought perfumed oil to Jesus' tomb (Matthew 27:61/Mark 15:47) (Matthew 28:1/Mark 16:1)(John 20:1) and was spoken to by an angel (Luke 24:10)

-that she was one of the people Jesus appeared to after his resurrection (John 20:16)

A:The New Testament never talks of any sister for Mary Magdalene. Yet there is a plausible way of saying that she did indeed have a sister.

Mark chapter 14 says a woman brought an alabaster box of ointment and anointed Jesus at the house of Simon the leper, late in the mission of Jesus. We do not know who this woman was.

Luke 7:36-50 says a sinful woman anointed the feet of Jesus from an alabaster box of ointment at the house of Simon, a Pharisee. Although this was an entirely different Simon, the stories have the alabaster box of ointment in common. We do not know the sinful woman's name, but the implication is that she was a prostitute.

John 12:1-8 says that Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus anointed the feet of Jesus with ointment. The story is different and the timing is earlier than in Mark's Gospel, but we now have a name, Mary.

Pope Gregory the Great decided in the sixth century that Mary, sister of Martha must be Mary Magdalene and that she and the sinful woman were the same person. At once, Mary Magdalene not only became a prostitute, but gained a sister, Martha.
